Tracing the Promised Seed

The promise of a future Redeemer that would be born into this world starts in Genesis 3 and ends in Luke 2 with the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Genesis 3:15
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

God made a promise from the very beginning to redeem mankind. He said the seed of the woman would be at enmity with the seed of the serpent and that the woman's seed would bruise his head and the serpent's seed would bruise it's heel. This seed of the woman is a reference to the virgin birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was foreordained of God to bruise the head of the Serpent, Satan.

Genesis 12:13
And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

After hundreds of years, all man knew was that God through the woman's seed was going to destroy the serpent and redeem mankind. Then in Genesis 12, we get further revelation on this promised seed. Now we know the promised seed will come from the lineage of Abraham: in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Genesis 22:18 further confirms that in Abraham's seed should all nations of the earth be blessed. So the Lord limits the promised seed to come from Abraham.

We know this promise went through Isaac and not Ishmael. For we read in Genesis 21:12 in Isaac shall thy seed be called. This clearly eliminates Ishmael and his descendants (the Arabs) from bringing forth the promised seed. It was and is through Isaac was the seed called.

We also know from scripture that the blessing of Abraham was passed on from Isaac to Jacob and his seed according to Genesis 28:1-4 and Numbers 24:9.

So far the Lord has declared that a man born of the seed of the woman, would come from the lineage of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the 12 tribes; would be a blessing to the whole earth and destroy the serpent.

He further goes on to say that this man would come from the tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:8-12, Numbers 24:9, 14-19). He says a Star would come out of Jacob and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel (specifically the tribe of Judah) that would destroy the enemies of the Lord and Israel and have dominion in the earth.

Then the Lord limits the promised seed to be of one of the sons of David according to 1 Chronicles 17:11-15.

So the promised seed would be born of the woman's seed, of the seed of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, out the tribe of Judah, and of David's seed. The Lord is starting to really narrow down where this man is going to come from. His birth must be drawing nigh!

Then the Lord declares in what city this man would be born.

Micah 5:2
But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

The Lord says this man would be born in Bethlehem of Judah, of the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and of David, after the seed of the woman. Notice he says here this man shall be ruler in Israel whose been around from everlasting. How about that? This is some special man? Who has been around from everlasting?

I can only think of one person who has been around for ever. The GREAT I AM, JEHOVAH God. Could it be the Lord is telling us through the prophet Micah that the promised seed, this promised deliverer that would be a blessing to all of mankind and destroy the serpent would actually be the Lord himself in the form of a man!?!?! It can't be! Oh but it is!

The Word was God and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us: God truly was manifest in the flesh (John 1:1, 14; 1 Timothy 3:16) and born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14) being called Immanuel, which being interpreted is God with us.

Isaiah 9:6-7
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

The child born, the Son that was given was Wonderful, Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace!

He was, and is, and always will be God with us, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ who appeared in the vail of flesh that he might reconcile us back unto himself by the blood of the cross. He offered himself without spot unto God and has received eternal redemption for us. He took away our sins and tasted death for us all, and rose again the third day according to the scriptures and is currently seated at the right hand of the Majesty on High saving and forgiving all those that come unto God by him.

2 Corinthians 9:15
Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

Worthy is the Lamb that was slain and has redeemed us to God by his blood! May all creatures in the heaven, in the earth, under the earth, and in the sea praise the name of the LORD for he is good and his mercy endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD and give thanks.
